Amazon will open a third fulfillment center in California, creating hundreds of full-time jobs.
The retailer made the announcement today, noting that the center will be located in Tracy, a city about 60 miles east of San Francisco. The 1-million-square -foot facility will be “state of the art” and will offer wages that are 30 percent higher than traditional retail positions.
Amazon opened its first fulfillment center in California in San Bernardino, a city 60 miles east of Los Angeles, late last year. It’s currently building another center in Patterson, a city about 90 miles southeast of San Francisco. That facility is expected to open this summer, officials report.
No estimated open date was given for the Tracy center.
The new facility shows California’s “strong partnership” with Amazon, says Kish Rajan, director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development.
“This third new distribution center marks a commitment by Amazon of over 1,000 California jobs in the last year alone,” he notes. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with this world-leading brand and hope to build more opportunities for Californians in the future.”
The three fulfillment centers are part of Amazon’s deal with California to expand its operations in the state in exchange for a pass on collecting sales tax until late last year. With the agreement, Amazon must create 10,000 full-time jobs in California and about 25,000 seasonal positions by 2015.
“We are excited to be growing in the state,” adds Mike Roth, vice president of Amazon’s North American operations.
Amazon has fulfillment centers in Arizona, Delaware, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington and in eight foreign countries, according to WebProNews.
