Amazon will open a new fulfillment center in South Carolina later this year, bringing more jobs to the area, and getting the online retailer closer to fulfilling requirements for an online sales-tax exception, officials announced today.
The center is expected to open in the fall and will cost Amazon about $50 million. It will be located in Spartanburg County, S.C., and employ nearly 400 people, full time, officials say.
Amazon opened its first fulfillment center in South Carolina last year, employing about 500 people, according to news reports. The new Spartanburg facility will help the retailer get closer to qualifying for a five-year sales-tax exception the state passed in 2011. It requires Amazon to employ 2,000 full-time employees in South Carolina by the end of 2012 to exempt it from collecting sales tax from residents.
Amazon officials say South Carolina has been a “great home” for the retailer and that the facility Amazon set up in the state last year “had a great” holiday season.
“We look forward to serving our customers from both Lexington and Spartanburg counties by the fall,” says Dave Clark, Amazon’s vice president of Global Fulfillment.
Bobby Hitt, South Carolina’s secretary of commerce, says the new facility is a welcome addition to the state.
“Our state has a vibrant and growing distribution and logistics sector, and having a company like Amazon continue to establish new operations here builds on that reputation,” he notes.
Amazon opened at least 10 fulfillment centers in United States in 2011, according to news reports.
